Samsung LN52A650 Review, The Problem With This HDTV

The Samsung LN52A650 is a HDTV with a 52-inch display and for the most part it's has very capable of producing great images, for me the TV only has one shortcoming even though its a minor one. The size of the TV certainly gives you a cinema experience in your living room and it has the added bonus of not taking up a lot of space being a flat panel, the screen for the TV is quite shiny and this can be a minor distraction if you have a light in front of it while watching it.

If at all possible you should position the TV facing away from your windows to get the best images from it, if you can do this it tends to enhance your viewing experience. Other than the shiny screen the TV itself is a fine piece of technology, colors are displayed vividly and they seem to have perfected the knack of displaying the color black. I found Batman, The Dark Knight' looked exceptional when watching it on this TV, you almost feel as though you could step into the scenes.

Samsung have thrown in the kitchen sink and more when it comes to the sockets and ports on this TV, there is even a USB port that you can use to playback music from MP3 players. The TV also has an Ethernet port that you can use to connect it to the Internet, through this you can see the latest information on stock, catch up on the news and get up to date weather reports. The news and weather are a nice touch but if you have an Internet connection you will likely have a PC, since the television has a PC video input you can connect your PC straight to it.

There are also four HDMI ports built into the TV and Samsung even appealed to people like me who are lazy by positioning one of them on the side, this HDMI port eliminates the burden of reaching around the back of the TV to plug in consoles and Blu-Ray disc players. At maximum the TV can display images at resolutions up to 1920 * 1080 or 1080p, its also worth noting that this TV has a hint of the color red blended into its outer casing.

In order to see the red you have to be standing very close to the TV, in most cases you can't see the red at all when looking at it in pictures, if your living room must have a black television then this TV may not be for you. As mentioned the red is barely noticeable but whether you like or hate the added hint of color it has no impact on your viewing pleasure, the other features on the TV in most cases will make its outer color insignificant.

The menu for controlling the TV's functions are adequate and I'm betting Samsung could have made it graphically appealing and unnecessarily cumbersome, instead the interface is simplistic and it makes the job of accessing and adjusting the TV's functions extremely easy. Setting the TV to display the image you want after its initial set-up takes very little time and this is partly due to the remote control, instead of including four arrow buttons Samsung have fitted a rotating clickable wheel to it making navigating the TV's menu straightforward.

They say hindsight is a great thing and now I have it I might have waited before getting this Samsung TV, it first came out in 2008 and now it is much cheaper than when first released. Other HDTV's of its size released recently may have one or two additional features the LN52A650 doesn't have but most cant beat its image quality or its current price.

Hank Baum has analysed the performance of the Samsung LN52A650 as well as its ability to display images and produce sound, for more information on the picture quality, features and availability of this digital television, check out his Samsung LN52A650 review.

HDTV is great but do you not think it is more expensive than it is good.
